Press Information
DisObey is a new film made by Jordan Baseman as a direct result of a Lincoln Voices residency at the University of Lincoln’s Law School and School of Social and Political Sciences. Lincoln Voices was funded by Arts Council England, the Leverhulme Trust, Magna Carta 800 Trust and Lincoln Cultural and Arts Partnership.

DisObey is an open and experimental portrait of ideas. The focus of the research attempts to expand (and contract) definitions and interpretations of the law. DisObey explores thinking around human rights, politics, activism, terrorism, youth crime and prevention, anti-social behavior, crime and deviance, social inclusion/exclusion, participation and representation.

DisObey features criminologist Jason Warr. Jason’s heavily edited narration discusses the nature of free will, individual and collective social responsibility within the construct of our current legal system. Jason calls for a re-ordering of society: a recognition that we need to change our thinking and behavior radically in order to create a society that is truly fair and just for all. Jason also discusses his personal relationship with the law.

DisObey explores some important questions: How does the law determine our human rights? What is the relationship between crime and the media? How does literature/popular culture portray crime, criminality, and victims? How do belief systems inform individual liberty and human rights? Where are the boundaries between Free Will and a greater social responsibility? What is the balance between civic belief systems and personal responsibilities? Why and how is crime viewed as a spectacle? What is citizenship?
