| Biography
Melanie Jackson (b.1968 Hollywood, West Midlands) studied at the Byam Shaw School
of Art and went on to complete an MA (Sculpture) at the Royal College of Art
in London, where she lives and works. In 2000/2002 she was a fellow at Camberwell
College of Arts MA in Book Arts; an Artists Link Artist in 2005 to exhibit and
make work in China; awarded an ACE International Fellowship in 2006 to research
island occupations in the East Indian Ocean; has recently been awarded the Jerwood
Drawing Prize, 2007 for her drawing A Global Positioning System; and has been
shortlisted for the Whitechapel MaxMara art prize. She was a senior lecturer
at Central Saint Martins School of Art 2004/2006 and is currently a pathway
leader in BA Fine Art Print and Digital Media at Wimbledon College of Art. She
has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally with recent solo
exhibitions including Road Angel, at the Arnolfini, Bristol in 2007; and Made
In China, Matt’s Gallery, London 2005. Recent group shows include Port
Cities at the Arnolfini Bristol, 2007; Trading Links, Plymouth City Museum and
Art Gallery; and Locale, A1 Contemporary Art Space, Hong Kong. She is interested
in what happens in documentary filmaking when the lens is replaced by drawing,
and in the nature of work and trade, and in news stories. She works with printed
matter, sculpture and model making, moving image and sound. She is currently
working on a large-scale tapestry charting the story of the East Indian Ocean
islands of Diego Garcia - and researching evolutionary trees and ethnographic
taxonomy for a series of large-scale drawings. Melanie Jackson is represented
