Information
The Daily Hayley is an unlimited boxed edition of approximately 1500 black & white photocopies of notated cuttings made in preparation for original performances by Hayley Newman that took place continuously over 16 days at Matt’s Gallery from Saturday 15th - Sunday 30th September 2001. This edition includes a 10-minute video clip from the original feature length film The Daily Hayley, (76 mins, 2003).

Using a six-month collection of daily national newspapers as a research archive (January to June 2001), Hayley Newman’s performances attempted to construct and explore relationships between an event and its mediation. The work involved re-animating events in the newspapers, presenting them as performances within the controlled environment of the Matt’s Gallery space.

The work was performed in the wake of September 11, the meta-narrative of which permeated both pre-meditated and improvised actions alike. Much of the original idea, concerned with the trauma of witnessing shocking images and articles alongside gossip reviews and inappropiate adverts, was not easy to transpose after September 11, which gave the press a heightened sense of serious validation.

Information
Produced on the occasion of Hayley Newman's exhibition The Daily Hayley at Matt's Gallery in September 2001, Performancemania is the first comprehensive publication of performance works by Newman. The book offers an overview of 34 performances made by the artist between 1994 and 2001 as well as including 21 ‘fake’ performances from Newman’s 1998 documentary series Connotations Performance Images. Works presented in the book are discussed within Newman’s self-interview. Identifying itself as a performance, the self-interview presents an analysis of textuality in relation to the mediation of performance both within and beyond the event of action, looking at text as score, document, prediction or testament.
