The print features the artist’s collection of 'thorn vases'. The colour
in this type of glassware results from the addition of Uranium Oxide, which
causes the glass to glow green under UV light.
Biography
Matthew Tickle (b. 1964 London). Lives and works in London. He studied 1989–90
at Slade School of Fine Art, London (Postgraduate Higher Diploma in Sculpture)
and 1987–89 West Surrey College of Art and Design (BA (Hons) Sculpture).
Matthew Tickle first showed at Matt’s Gallery in 1995 with Scrutiny and
again in 1999 when he made Idyll at the gallery; later producing a book-work
in 2001 with an accompanying essay ‘Installation and Photography: Matthew
Tickle’s Idyll’ by Michael Newman, published by Matt’s Gallery,
London. In 2004 he made What the eye can’t see the heart can’t grieve
for, a temporary public artwork at Queen Mary, University of London. This was
a collaborative venture that brought Matthew Tickle together with theoretical
physicist, Dr Fay Dowker, to produce a scintillating artwork that lit up the
interior spaces of buildings, in time to the firing of Geiger counters triggered
by background radiation. Supported by an EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences
Research Council) grant and the Queen Mary Physics Department, the piece provoked
debate about the relationship between art and science and was accompanied by
a DVD of the work and booklet of essays by Dr Fay Dowker and Sally O’Reilly.
In 2006 he exhibited Punctum and Nebula at Hull Art Lab, Hull, an installation
which brought together elements as disparate as background radiation, strobe
lighting, sound and billboard images to create an exhibition in which attention
and the physical presence of the viewer were challenged. Selected group exhibitions
include It starts from here (2007) at De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill; Hyper Passive,
Camera Obscura, Shock, Matt's Gallery, London (2005) Revision, Pitfield Gallery,
London (2003); Plastic, Richard Salmon Gallery, London; Arnolfini, Bristol;
Walsall Museum & Art Gallery, Walsall [catalogue]. Matthew Tickle is represented
by Matt’s Gallery, London.
