Press Information
Love Your Voice was a workshop project by artist Eva Weinmayr in collaboration with Matt’s Gallery and local St. Pauls Way Community School. Pupils were invited to explore the use and manipulation of language in the media, with an insight into Weinmayr’s on-going investigations into the abbreviated code-language of newstand posters/teaser bills.

The initial stage focused on the written word. Groups considered possible stories and events that could relate to the two/three word headlines of Evening Standard posters collected over the last few years. After establishing the wealth of potential interpretations, the groups deconstructed and categorised the featured words in order to create new fictional headlines. This became a departure point for the interpretation of each others’ stories, culminating in a wall of words and images that mixed the real and the fictional.

Focusing on sound as a method of communication, investigations began into the different types and qualities of sounds that could be generated in the space, using everyday objects and the collective voice. A recorded variation of ‘chinese whispers’ followed the deterioration of the previous day's fictional headlines as they were reported through a microphone and headset. The project culminated with the presentation of a CD and booklet, documenting the event, to the pupils at the school.

The workshop expanded upon Eva Weinmayer’s recent practice around poster/teaser bills including an exhibition Water Found on Mars (2006) and the artist book Suitcase Body Is Missing Woman (2005).
