Current exhibition at Matt’s Gallery
Matt’s Gallery is currently showing Blue Movie by Jordan Baseman. The exhibition is Baseman’s second at the gallery and features a 16 mm film that incorporates found pornographic footage (originating from the early 1940s during Nazi occupied Belgium) with an original soundtrack based on academic enquiry and discourse. Blue Movie will continue until 25 July 2009, and screens on a Saturday and Sunday only 12–6pm.

Installation for the next exhibition at Matt’s Gallery is now underway. Paul Carter’s Hotel will be shown from 9 September–1 November 2009.

David Troostwyk celebrates his 80th birthday in August. The occasion has been marked by Tate Britain with the hanging of his painting Halucigen in the gallery.

Artists exhibitions and events continued
Imogen Stidworthy will be showing The Whisper Heard (originally commissioned and shown at Matt’s Gallery 24 September– 16 November 2003) in the group exhibition See This Sound: Promises in Sound and Vision at the Lentos Museum in Linz, Austria from 28 August 2009–10 January 2010.

Nathaniel Mellors Time Surgeon, will show at De Garage, Mechelen as part of Contour 2009 from 15 August–18 October 2009.

Nathaniel Mellors is showing his work Time Surgeon in the Contour 2009 Biennial in Mechelen, Belgium at De Garage. Including guided tours and nocturnal visits the Biennial runs from 15 August–18 October 2009.

Jimmie Durham is exhibiting work in Summertime; or, Close-ups on Places We’ve (Never) Been, an exhibition of film and video works at San Francisco Art Institute. The exhibition runs from 27 June–12 September 2009 at The Walter and McBean Galleries.

A solo exhibition of Fiona Crisp’s large-scale photographic work entitled Subterrania will be shown at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead from 31 July–4 October 2009. The exhibition takes images from four series produced over the last six years. A publication and limited edition print have been produced to accompany the exhibition. By appointment only, a year long exhibition by David Osbaldeston will be showing at Matt’s Gallery (Office) from 1 October 2008 to 30 September 2009. To arrange a weekday viewing please call 07541 313941 or visit the Matt’s Gallery (Office) website for further information.

Jordan Baseman will be exhibiting new work in Commonwealth Suite at Collective, Edinburgh from 23 May to 17 July. The show features two separate Collective film commissions by Jordan Baseman and Henna-Riikka Halonen filmed in Edinburgh's Royal Commonwealth Pool.

A film entitled 5 Drawings by Anne Bean will be shown as part of the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition from 8 June–16 August.

Alison Turnbull Moon with Coloured Rectangles, can be seen at the City Gallery, Leicester until 24 October, as part of the exhibition Pattern Recognition.

The City Gallery, Leicester will also show Alison Turnbull’s work as part of the exhibition Pattern Recognition from 20 June–24 October 2009, in which artists will show work exploring the emergence and dissolution of pattern.

Anne Bean will be showing work at Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne in the exhibition Notes on a Return where residual fragments from performances at the gallery during 1985–1987 and will be traced and re-exhibited. Audio and archival installations will be presented from 18 April–30 August 2009.

Fiona Crisp is exhibiting a series of photographs entitled Stourhead Series in FotoGrafia, International Photography Festival, Rome from 29 May–2 August 2009.

Carolyn Thompson has been commissioned to produce a sound piece for Bury Art Gallery and Museum. The piece entitled Progress be shown as part of The Text Festival from 2 May–12 September 2009.

A solo show of Nathaniel Mellors’ Giantbum will be showing at Montehermoso, Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain from 22 May–30 August 2009.

Intern News
Tom Trevatt joins the gallery as the new Stanley Picker Intern (July-December 2009). Tom will be graduating from the MFA Curating at Goldsmiths College this year, and previously studied Critical Fine Art Practice at the University of Brighton. Along with Robert Dingle and Amal Khalaf, he set up not-for-profit project space Hold & Freight in Stepney, East London, in June 2008.

Publications and Editions
The first of three prints by Lindsay Seers, each available as a limited edition of 9, is now available to purchase through the Matt’s Gallery website or at the gallery. This first edition entitled Swallowing Black Maria relates to the installation Extramission 6 (Black Maria) recently presented at Altermodern: the 4th Tate Triennial of British Art at Tate Britain. Fiona Crisp Hyper Passive monograph published by Matt’s Gallery, now available for purchase from the gallery

Matt’s Gallery has published a new monograph on the work of Fiona Crisp. Hyper Passive surveys the visual, conceptual and philosophical aspects of Fiona Crisp’s large-scale photographic work over the past decade, and places it in the wider historical context of art and photography.

This fully illustrated publication includes an essay by Professor Christopher Townsend (Royal Holloway, University of London) and an interview with Alessandro Vincentelli (BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead).
The book is distributed by Cornerhouse and is available to purchase online via the Matt’s Gallery website, at the gallery and in all good bookshops.

Fiona Crisp has also produced a limited edition print to coincide with the opening of her exhibition Subterrania at BALTIC on 31 July 2009. The print is an edition of 40 and is currently available to pre-order from the gallery. Please visit the edition pages for further information.
