Current Exhibition at Matt’s Gallery
Our current exhibition, The Last Silent Movie by Susan Hiller takes form as a series of screenings over three weekends in July. The exhibition comprises a film entitled The Last Silent Movie, featuring silent archives of extinct and endangered languages. A further suite of 24 etchings accompanies the film, based upon oscilloscope traces of the voices heard on the soundtrack. Screenings will be held on 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 & 27 July and are on the hour and at half past the hour. The last showing of the day is at 5.30pm.

Here are some of the highlights of June, July and August:

A comprehensive selection of Susan Hiller’s work from the past ten years, Outlaw Cowgirl and other works, can currently be seen at the Bawag Foundation, Vienna. The exhibition continues until 17 August 2008

Nathaniel Mellors will be showing in Art Now: The Way in Which it Landed curated by Ryan Gander at Tate Britain from 2 August—26 October 2008.

Gasworks is currently presenting a solo exhibition by Gail Pickering. The exhibition features two video works, Dissident Sunset, 2007, and Hungary! And Other Economies, 2006 and continues until 27 July.

The Photographers' Gallery, London and Artsway are co-commissioning Jordan Baseman to make a series of new films about Soho, in response to The Photographers' Gallery move to temporary premises in Soho during 2009. The project will culminate in a solo exhibition touring to Artsway in February 2009 and The Photographers' Gallery in April/May.

Works by Lucy Gunning and Kate Smith are currently showing in Machinic Alliances at Danielle Arnaud Contemporary Art curated by Maria Walsh, Mo Throp and Danielle Arnaud.

On 4th July Jo Bruton and the Subjectivities and Feminisms Research Group orgainsed Candyfloss Parade at the Parade Ground, Chelsea College of Art & Design. The evening included cheerleading followed by screenings of artists films.

Artists exhibitions and events continued
John Russell's solo exhibition The Paint can be seen at MOTInternational from 14 June to 20 July. The Paint is not to do with the production of images. It is to do with the construction of a knid of superficial multi-functional dream-scultpture.

Work by Graham Fagen is currently on show at the Centro Cultural Andratx, Mallorca, in the exhibition Supernatural running from 10 May—10 August 2008. The exhibition features painting, sculpture, video, film, installation, photography and new media by 20 international contemporary artists. Graham Fagen's work can also be seen in What is Life, an exhibition at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh from 12 July—31 August, comprising new and recent sculpture by Graham Fagen, Christian Borland and Simon Starling.

Continuing Exhibitions:
The following exhibtions and events were featured in the May News page but are still running throughout July and August:

John Frankland will be showing in Space Now, an exhibition to celebrate 40 years of [ space ], selected from current Space studio artists by Caroline Douglas, Head of Arts Council Collections. The exhibition runs from 13 June to 26 July 2008.

Alison Turnbull's work can be seen in Darwin's Canopy: Proposals by 10 artists at The National History Museum from continuing to September 14 2008.

Nathaniel Mellors' The Time Surgeon, 2007 will be installed at Stedelijk Museum CS, Amsterdam as part of Deep Screen—Art in Digital Culture Proposal for Municipal Art Acquisitions 2008, from 30 May to 30 August 2008. The Time Surgeon was commissioned by ArtSway and Biennale de Lyon 2007 with support of Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten.

Mike Nelson will be recreating To the memory of H.P. Lovecraft, first shown in the Collective Gallery Edinburgh in 1999, at the Hayward Gallery as part of Psycho Buildings: Artists and Architecture from 28 May to 25 August.

Staff News
Joyce Cronin, Matt’s Gallery Exhibitions Manager, has recently given birth to a baby boy and will be taking maternity January 2009. Whilst Joyce is away Clare Fitzpatrick and Holly Slingsby will be dealing with her work.

Intern News
In June we said goodbye to Matt’s Gallery intern Sarah Purchase who has been with the Gallery for two years during which time she has completed MA Critical Writing and Curatorial Practice at Cheslea College of Art & Design. Sarah will be Curator in Residence at Jatkaproject in Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic throughout June, July and August. Jatkaproject is run by another former Matt’s Gallery intern Larissa Hadjo .
