Next exhibition at Matt’s Gallery
The next exhibition at Matt’s Gallery will be All Suffering SOON TO END! by Jennet Thomas. The exhibition will run from 14 April–6 June 2010 and comprises narrative film and installation which incorporates sculpture, sound and performance.

Artists’ exhibitions, projects, awards and events
Here are some highlights for March and April 2010:

The British Council have announced that Mike Nelson has been selected to represent Britain at the 54th Venice Biennale. He will present a solo exhibition in the British Pavilion, which will run from June to November 2011. Mike Nelson’s most recent work, Quiver of Arrows, 2010, can currently be seen in a solo exhibition at 303 Gallery, New York until 10 April 2010.

Mike Nelson’s The Coral Reef, originally comissioned by Matt’s Gallery in 2000, has been purchased by the Tate and will be on view at Tate Britain from 17 May 2010.

A major survey of recent works by Imogen Stidworthy will be exhibited at Arnolfini from 27 February until 25 April 2010. The exhibition comprises moving image and sound work including I Hate, commissioned for Documenta 12, and Barrabackslarrabang, commissioned for the exhibition XXX Get Off at Edge Hill, at Metal, Edge Hill Station, Liverpool in 2009.

David Osbaldeston and Joe Devlin present Europas part of the project The Proincial Forge, John Rylands Library, Manchester 10 February–7 April 2010.

The Provincial Forge a project by David Osbaldeston and Joe Devlin, will present Europas the second instalment of a three cycle programme of exhibitions which physically re-work and re-present artists publications from around the world. The Provincial Forge can be found inside the John Rylands Library, Manchester in the Cloister Gallery display cases, and are available for viewing during opening times from 10 February–7 April 2010.

David Osbaldeston Out of Time (The Light of Day/The Action of Play), will run at Castlefield Gallery, Manchester 16 April–6 June 2010.

A solo show of David Osbaldeston’s work called Out of Time (The Light of Day / The Action of Play), will run at Castlefield Gallery, Manchester from 16 April to 6 June 2010. Through manipulated images of news photography and a print series of interpretive book cover designs from Luigi Pirandello’s celebrated play Six Characters in Search of an Author, the exhibition will explore relationships between the gallery and theatre staging, displacement, reality, illusion and social discord.

John Frankland You Can't Touch This 1993 (installation view)

The Gathering, an exhibition at the Longside Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, charts the provenance of over thirty works selected from the past forty years of the Arts Council Collection. John Frankland will exhibit You Can't Touch This (1993) in the exhibition which runs from 5 March–18 April 2010.

Nathaniel Mellors Seven Ages of Britain Teaser, 2010 (video still)

Excerpts of a new work by Nathaniel Mellors will be broadcast as part of the BBC's Seven Ages of Britain series presented by David Dimbleby. The series tells the story of Britain through its art and treasure. Mellors' work will feature in the final episode entitled Age of Ambition on BBC 1 at 9pm on Sunday 21 March 2010.

Nathaniel Mellors will also present a solo show of new works at Monitor, Rome. The exhibition will open on 17 April 2010.

Jordan Baseman Nature's Great Experiment, 2007 (film still)

As part of the Wellcome Collection's Identity Project, Jordan Baseman will be screening Nature's Great Experiment, a series of three films at Catalyst Arts, Belfast on 13 April, at Aberdeen University on 22 April and during Glimmer: The 8th Hull International Short Film Festival.

A solo show of Baseman's work entitled The Most Powerful Thing in this World... can be seen at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art until 9 May 2010.

Jimmie Durham Building a Nation, 2006 (installation at Matt's Gallery, London) now showing at Haus der Kulturen der Welt from 14 March to 9 May 2010

Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, are presenting Jimmie Durham's Building a Nation, in the exhibition On Rage from 14 March to 9 May 2010. The piece was originally commissioned by Matt's Gallery and first shown at the gallery in 2006.

An exhibition of newly commissioned work by Jimmie Durham, Universal Miniture Golf (The Promised Land) created during a three month Production Residency for Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art, will be on show at Glasgow Sculpture Studios from 16 April until 3 May 2010.

A solo show of Melanie Jackson’s work The Ur-pflanze (Part 1) will be showing at The Drawing Room from 29 April until 20 June 2010. The exhibition investigates links between industry, aesthetics and plant forms, taking a lead from Goethe's notion of the Urpflanze.

A publication to accompany the exhibition has been produced by Matt’s Gallery and The Drawing Room is currently available from free to visitors of both venues. Melanie Jackson will be in conversation with Marcus Verhagen at The Drawing Room on 19 May 2010.

Melanie Jackson The Urpflanze publication currently available free from Matt's Gallery and The Drawing Room to coincide with the exhibition of the same name at The Drawing Room from 29 April until 20 June 2010.

International Fauna by Melanie Jackson will be shown online from 19 April at www.animateprojects.org and www.anti-bodies.net/relational. The piece has been commissioned by Relational and produced with Picture This and Animate Projects as part of the Anti-Bodies contemporary art programme. A screening and discussion will be held at Picture This, Bristol on 8 May 2010.

Anne Bean will perform as part of the National Review of Live Art 2010 on 18 March at The Arches, Glasgow. PAVES, performed with Vlasta Delimar, Efi Ben-David, Sinead O'Donnell and Poshya Kakl, is the culmination of a year-long creative collaboration between five female artists working in the UK, Croatia, Israel, Northern Ireland and Kurdistan-Iraq. The artists have spent time together in each country responding to each other's work, experiences and environments. This performance installation, made especially for NRLA, seeks to bring together all the component parts of the year.

Also for the National Review of Live Art, Anne Bean will be involved in Crossing Zones, a panel discussion where artists who make collaborative work will talk about the insights and challenges of international creative exchange. The event will take place on 19 March at the Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow.

Anne Bean and Richard Wilson will speak about an event they created in November 2009 in the Red Jail, Sulimanya Iraq as part of a talk organised by ArtRole and Cornerhouse Manchester. The talk will take place at Cornerhouse on 16 April 2010. Anne Bean will also talk about MASS, an event she created with 20 local women in Erbil, Iraq 2008.

Artists' exhibitions and events continued

Lindsay Seers' work will be included in Hands On, at Galerie Raum Mit Licht, Vienna from 3 March to 22 April. The exhibition comprises of photographs by four British artists and is curated by John Hilliard.

Roy Voss will be exhibiting at the Fordham Gallery, London on Friday 19 and Friday 26 March 2010. Voss' work can also be seen in a two person show, alongside Kate Davis at The Russian Club, London 1 April–8 May 2010.

In December 2009 The Gluts (Hayley Newman, Gina Birch and Kaffe Matthews) performed their eco-electro climate inspired musical Cafe Carbon in Copenhagen during the Climate Summit. On 19 March at Cafe Oto, London they will perform songs from Cafe Carbon interspersed with presentations by invited artists and activists.

A film named The Gluts go to Copenhagen, will be shown as part of the AV Festival, Newcastle at Vane Contemporary Art, Newcastle from 5–14 March 2010.

Lucy Gunning and Michael Curran will work together in RELLA their first collaboration, a joint residency at Beaconsfield, London running from 23 March–11 April. The artists will work from zero exploring the potential of the space through experimental and investigative studio practice. Visitors are welcome to view the artists at work and will later be invited to participate. The residency will culminate in a series of events.

Continuing Exhibitions
The following exhibitions and events were featured in the January & February News page but will continue throughout March and April 2010:

Fiona Crisp’s exhibition of large-scale photographic work entitled Subterrania will end its tour at Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall from 13 February–17 April 2010. Newlyn Art Gallery initiated the tour which recently visited BALTIC Centre of Contemporary Art, Gateshead and Impressions Gallery, Bradford. The exhibition takes images from four series produced over the last six years. A publication and limited edition print have been produced to accompany the exhibition. Fiona Crisp Pump Lodge 2009 taken at Boulby Mine on the North Yorkshire/Cleveland coast, commissioned by Impressions Gallery, Bradford and exhibited as part of Subterrannia at Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall

The Most Powerful Weapon in this World is a major exhibition of Jordan Baseman’s work at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art comprising three recent films. The works in the exhibition use found material and original 16mm footage to accompany voice-driven narratives. The exhibition runs from 6 February–9 May 2010.

The Gstaad Film Festival–4th International Festival of Artists' Film, Switzerland on 12–13 March will also be screening Nasty Piece of Stuff by Jordan Baseman.

A solo exhibition of Mike Nelson’s work at 303 Gallery, New York will run from 27 February–10 April 2010. Mike Nelson will also show work in Crash at Gagosian Gallery, London, a major group exhibition opening on 11 February 2010, which takes its title from the famous novel by JG Ballard. The exhibition continues until 1 April 2010.

Mike Nelson’s work will also be shown at 176 Zabludowicz Collection in an exhibition entitled The Library of Babel / In and Out of Place from 25 February–9 May 2010.

The QUAD Gallery, Derby will be presenting a major exhibition of Ian Breakwell’s work. Ian Breakwell showed The Waiting Room at Matt's Gallery in 1985. The exhibition entitled The Elusive State of Happiness at The Quad Gallery will run from 13 February to 18 April 2010.

Publications and Editions available to purchase online
A limited edition print by Alison Turnbull is now available to purchase. The Archival pigment print on Hahnemuhle Fine Art paper, entitled Peppered Moth Print, is an edition of 3, and was created as part of the exhibition Darwin's Canopy at the Natural History Museum, London in 2008.

Alison Turnbull has recently completed a residency on the Galapagos Islands as part of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Galapagos Conservation Trust celebrations for Darwin's bicentenary.

Intern News
Matt’s Gallery have recently welcomed the first Stanley Picker Intern of 2010. Matilda Strang will be working at the gallery for six months. Matilda is currently studying on the MFA Curating course at Goldsmiths and will be with the gallery until July.
