Next exhibition at Matt’s Gallery
The current exhibition at Matt’s Gallery is All Suffering SOON TO END! by Jennet Thomas. The exhibition runs until 6 June 2010 and comprises narrative film and installation which incorporates sculpture, sound and performance.

Artists’ exhibitions, projects, awards and events
Here are some highlights for May and June 2010:

The British Council have announced that Mike Nelson has been selected to represent Britain at the 54th Venice Biennale. He will present a solo exhibition in the British Pavilion, which will run from JuneNovember 2011.

Mike Nelson’s The Coral Reef, originally comissioned by Matt’s Gallery in 2000, has been purchased by the Tate and will be exhibited at Tate Britain from 17 May 2010.

Richard Grayson has been selected to exhibit in the 17th Biennale of Sydney 2010. The Biennale opens on 12 May, running until 1 August 2010 and is curated by David Elliott. Grayson’s work Messiah, which was originally commissioned by Matt’s Gallery in 2004, can be seen at the Cockatoo Island site. Susan Hiller will also show The Last Silent Movie at the Biennale, which screened at Matt’s Gallery in 2008.

A solo show of David Osbaldeston’s work called Out of Time (The Light of Day / The Action of Play), will run at Castlefield Gallery, Manchester from 16 April6 June 2010. Through manipulated images of news photography and a print series of interpretive book cover designs from Luigi Pirandello’s celebrated play Six Characters in Search of an Author, the exhibition will explore relationships between the gallery and theatre staging, displacement, reality, illusion and social discord.

David Osbaldeston is also showing his work Another shadow fight as part of the group show Avalon at Embassy Gallery, Edinburgh, from 18 June11 July 2010.

A solo exhibition of new work by Nathaniel Mellors will be presented at Monitor, Rome. The exhibition runs from 16 April–29 May 2010 and included the work Seven Ages of Britain Teaser, created for the BBC’s Seven Ages of Britain series presented by David Dimbleby.

Jordan Baseman’s tour of Nature’s Great Experiment, a series of three films will continue to Bury St Edmunds Art Gallery on 25 May and Modern Art Oxford on 24 June 2010. The tour is part of the Wellcome Collection’s Identity Project.

Jordan Baseman and Nathaniel Mellors will both contribute to Grizedale Arts—Adding Complexity to Confusion: A History of Engaged Practice as part of Late at Tate Britain on Friday 4 June 2010 at Tate Britain, London.

A solo show of Melanie Jackson’s work The Ur-pflanze (Part 1) is showing at The Drawing Room from 29 April until 20 June 2010. The exhibition investigates links between industry, aesthetics and plant forms, taking a lead from Goethe's notion of the Urpflanze. Melanie Jackson will be in conversation with art historian and critic Marcus Verhagen at The Drawing Room on 19 May at 7pm.

International Fauna by Melanie Jackson is now showing online at www.animateprojects.org and www.anti-bodies.net/relational. The piece has been commissioned by Relational and produced with Picture This and Animate Projects as part of the Anti-Bodies contemporary art programme.

Paul Rooney will be showing McKenzie, a new sound work at St Andrew’s Church, Rodney Street, Liverpool from 19—22 May. Inspired by a local Liverpool legend about William McKenzie, a gambler who is said to have made a pact with the devil to ensure a winning hand in a poker game, the piece is commissioned by Sound and Music as part of Memories are Made of This: Sound and Music at Liverpool Sound City.

Artists' exhibitions and events continued
Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen are exhibiting a major new work by Lindsay Seers from 22 May–26 September 2010. It has to be this way² is a co-commision by Statens Museum for Kunst and Mead Gallery, University of Warwick.

A novella by M. Anthony Penwill also entitled It has to be this way2, forms part of the exhibition, and will be available from the Statens Museum.

Hayley Newman's works Crying Glasses (1998) and Kiss Exam (1999) are included in the exhibition Emporte Moi at Musee d'Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne, Paris. The exhibition runs from 8 May5 September 2010.

Alison Turnbull's work can be seen in an exhibition at Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, as part of the British Council's Darwin Now programme. The exhibition On the Edge of the World runs from 14 May15 July 2010.

LACK, an exhibition comprising two video installations by Willie Doherty, opened at Alexander and Bonin, New York on 7 May 2010. The exhibition will include new work entitled Unfinished, 2010 alongside Buried, 2009, and will run from 7 May26 June 2010.

The Russian Club are hosting a group exhibition Sameness & Difference in which Roy Voss will be involved. The exhibition runs from 27 May3 July 2010.

Continuing Exhibitions & Last Chance to See

Lucy Gunning and Michael Curran continue to work together on RELLA their first collaboration, which began with a joint residency at Beaconsfield, London from 23 March–11 April.

Staff News
Holly Slingsby past Stanley Picker Intern and Finance Administrator will be completing her studies in MA Fine Art by exhibiting in The Slade School of Art MA/MFA Fine Art degree show from 9 June—16 June.

Carolyn Thompson, Gallery Manager Communications is exhibiting work in Banned Books in Australia at the Baillieu Library, University of Melbourne, Victoria. The exhibition coincides with the Bibliographical Society of Australia and New Zealand's Annual Conference To deprave and corrupt: Forbidden, Hidden and Censored Texts and will run from 7 June—23 August 2010.

Publications and Editions available to purchase online
A publication to accompany Melanie Jackson's exhibition The Ur-pflanze (Part 1) at The Drawing Room, London, has been produced by Matt’s Gallery and The Drawing Room and is currently available from free to visitors of both venues. Melanie Jackson will be in conversation with Marcus Verhagen at The Drawing Room on 19 May 2010.

To accompany Melanie Jackson's exhibition The Ur-Pflanze (Part 1) at The Drawing Room, London, an editioned publication has been produced by the artist in collaboration with writer Esther Leslie.

The publication is supplied in a limited edition of 100, in a screenprinted archival box also containing a unique offset litho 'make ready' print version, signed by the artist. The publication is available, priced £20.00 plus postage and package at Matt's Gallery and The Drawing Room and will be available to purchase from the Matt's Gallery website soon.
