David Troostwyk 1929–2009
David Troostwyk sadly passed away on Tuesday 29 September. David Troostwyk was the first artist to exhibit at Matt's Gallery in September 1979 with an audio work entitled Our Famous Culture and a washing machine cast in resin entitled Supreme Object. He went on to show a total of five times over the years and his influence was very important to Robin Klassnik, and instrumental in the establishment of the Gallery's ethos.

David Troostwyk celebrated his 80th birthday in August. The occasion was marked at Tate Britain with the hanging of his painting Halucigen in the gallery. For images please click here.

Matt’s Gallery celebrates 30 years
On Wednesday 16 September Matt’s Gallery celebrated its 30th anniversary. The first exhibition opened in Robin Klassnik's studio at 10 Martello Street, London Fields E8, which then became Matt's Gallery, now at Copperfield Road, E3. Since 1979 the Gallery has exhibited 67 artists in 135 solo exhibitions.

Robin Klassnik wishes to thank the artists, and all those who have contributed over the years.

The anniversary year will commence with Paul Carter’s exhibition Hotel from 9 September to 1 November 2009.

Current exhibition at Matt’s Gallery
Matt’s Gallery is currently showing Hotel by Paul Carter. The exhibition is Paul Carter’s first at the gallery and features a sculptural installation that disrupts the architectural features of the gallery, incorporating elements that have been transplanted from the artist’s studio or reclaimed from other sites. Hotel will run from 9 September–1 November 2009, Wed–Sun, 12–6pm.

Paul Carter will also be showing new work in the solo exhibition Rm.14 at Standpoint Gallery where he is the current winner of the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award, from 18 September until 24 October. Standpoint Gallery will host a talk with the artist on Thursday 1 October at 6.30pm.

Artists exhibitions, projects, awards and events
Here are some highlights for September and October 2009:

Congratulations to Matt’s Gallery artist Lindsay Seers, who after being shortlisted for the Film London and Channel 4 Jarman Award 2009 was announced the winner at the Whitechapel Gallery on 22 September. A tour of screening and performance events of the shortlisted artists’ work preceded the announcement at the CCA, Glasgow, Picture This, Bristol and the Whitechapel Gallery, London. Seers will receive a cash prize and a unique broadcast commission to make four artworks for Channel 4's Three Minute Wonder strand.

The Musée National Des Beaux-Arts Du Québec will be showing Hayley Newman’s work as part of Emporte-moi / Sweep me off my feet an exhibition that addresses the value of emotion in contemporary art. The exhibition runs from 24 September 2009–11 January 2010.

Hayley Newman will also be playing in Longplayer Live at the Roundhouse, London on 12 September 2009, a live performance of 1,000 minutes of Jem Finer's Longplayer, which has been playing continuously by computer since 2000, at listening posts around the world.

Roy Voss will be taking part in Rotate, a new exhibition programme at the Emerald Street offices of the Contemporary Art Society. The exhibition will run from 5 October 2009–8 January 2010.

Ian McKeever’s exhibition Temple Paintings will be showing at Kings Place Gallery, London from 4 September–17 October 2009.

Anne Bean will take part in a two-day symposium at the Laing Gallery, Newcastle on 4–5 September 2009. Notes on a Return references a performance Anne created at the gallery in 1987.

Visiting Iraq in October for the third time, Anne Bean will work on a performance for the opening of ArtRole’s three-day festival Post War Art & Culture in Iraq-KRG from 7–9 November 2009.

As part of her collaborative PAVES project Anne Bean and fellow artists Sinead O'Donnell, Vlasta Delimar, Efi Ben-David and Poshya Kakl will visit Belfast in September hosted by Golden Thread Gallery, where they will work collaboratively in the project space from 14–29 September 2009.

Anne will also be exhibiting an installation at Labatoria-Way Out, Space 28, Lisbon, opening on 8 October 2009.

Susan Hiller will be showing in British Subjects: Identity and Self-Fashioning 1967-2009 at Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase, New York from 13 September to 13 December 2009. The exhibition explores the changes in what it means to be British and in conceptions of selfhood and self-portraiture over the last 40 years.

Susan Hiller will be showing The Last Silent Movie (2007) at the Göteborgs Konsthall as part of the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art, Sweden, which runs from 5 September–15 November 2009.

FRED (London) is also currently showing Susan Hiller's work in the exhibition College, London/New York, which runs until 27 September.

Imogen Stidworthy is exhibiting in a group exhbition Getting off at Edge Hill at Metal, Liverpool. The show is curated by Al and Al and opens 22 October.

During October Alison Turnbull will be completing a residency, funded by the Gulbenkian Foundation, in the Galapagos Islands. The artist will be one of nine British artists invited to visit the Galapagos during Charles Darwin's bicentenary year.

Artists exhibitions and events continued

David Osbaldeston BLOG Notice, (digital inkjet print) is showing at the Laing Gallery, Newcastle as part of the Northern Print Biennial: 2009 Print Awards.

David Osbaldeston is exhibiting two works BLOG Notice and Another Shadow Fight as part of the Northern Print Biennial: 2009 Print Awards at the Laing Gallery, Newcastle until 4 October 2009. The Provincial Forge, a project by David Osbaldeston and Joe Devlin aims to imaginatively cannibalise pre-existing published forms of artistic practice influence by and directly using the material of conversations originating elsewhere. It comprises a series of presentations within cabinets situated in John Rylands Library, Deansgate Manchester. Their first exhibition Americas will take place 23 September–13 December 2009. The Provincial Forge will also be stall holders at Publish and be Damned Self-Publishing Fair on 27 September.

Bellevue, a film by Paul Rooney, co-commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella and the Bluecoat, in association with Harewood House, Leeds and Spacex Exeter, will initially be part of the exhibition Under the Volcano at the Bluecoat, Liverpool from 25 September–22 November 2009. Rooney will also show Lost High Street a video work created in 2008 in Running Time: Artist Films in Scotland 1960 to Now at the Dean Gallery, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh from 17 October–22 November 2009.

Paul Rooney has also been commissioned by Leeds Metropolitan University and Sound and Music to create a new sited sound work entitled Thin Air, for Expo Leeds from 25-28 September 2009. The piece will then continue to be sited at Leeds Metropolitan University's Broadcasting Place for a year

The Manchester Contemporary has commissioned Nathaniel Mellors to created a new work, entitled The Tipp-Ex Block / Play Below Zero for this year's fair which runs from 24–27 September 2009 at Urbis, Manchester.

Fiona Crisp Abteilung Nr/E, 2005/6 from Abteilung Series, (archival digital print from colour transparency) can be seen at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art 31 July–4 October 2009 and then tours to Impressions Gallery, Bradford and Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall

A solo exhibition of Fiona Crisp’s large-scale photographic work entitled Subterrania will be shown at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead from 31 July–4 October 2009. The exhibition will then tour to Impressions Gallery, Bradford from 20 November–24 January 2010 and Newlyn Art Gallery, Cornwall from 13 February–17 April 2010. The exhibition takes images from four series produced over the last six years. A publication and limited edition print have been produced to accompany the exhibition. A solo exhibition of Willie Doherty’s work entitled Passages will be showing at Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art, Toronto from 24 September–28 November 2009.

Mike Nelson will be showing in Journeys With No Return at Akbank Culural Centre, Turkey during the Istanbul Biennial. The exhibition is curated by Peter Cross and Alice Sharp and runs from 10 September–31 October.

Continuing Exhibitions
The following exhibitions and events were featured in the July–August News page but are still running throughout September–October:

Alison Turnbull Moon with Coloured Rectangles, can be seen at the City Gallery, Leicester until 24 October, as part of the exhibition Pattern Recognition.

The City Gallery, Leicester will also show Alison Turnbull’s work as part of the exhibition Pattern Recognition from 20 June–24 October 2009, in which artists will show work exploring the emergence and dissolution of pattern.

Nathaniel Mellors Time Surgeon, will show at De Garage, Mechelen as part of Contour 2009 from 15 August–18 October 2009.

Nathaniel Mellors is showing his work Time Surgeon in the Contour 2009 Biennial in Mechelen, Belgium at De Garage. Including guided tours and nocturnal visits the Biennial runs from 15 August–18 October 2009.

Imogen Stidworthy will be showing The Whisper Heard (originally commissioned and shown at Matt’s Gallery 24 September– 16 November 2003) in the group exhibition See This Sound: Promises in Sound and Vision at the Lentos Museum in Linz, Austria from 28 August 2009–10 January 2010.

Staff News
Frances Scott, Acting Gallery Manager (Projects) will be leaving Matt’s Gallery in September, when she will be taking up a place at Wimbledon College of Arts, University of the Arts, London to study MA Fine Art Sculpture. Clare Fitzpatrick will return to the position of Gallery Manager (Projects) after maternity leave in October.

Carolyn Thompson Matt’s Gallery Manager (Communications) will be showing work in I am alone but... at Daire Sanat Gallery, Istanbul from 4 September–3 October 2009 and also at Shandy Hall Gallery, Coxwold in The Black Page from 6 September–31 October 2009

Intern News
Stanley Picker Intern Ashleigh Pearson, has recently finished her internship at Matt’s Gallery, and will be undertaking a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at Wimbledon College of Art, University of the Arts, London, where she continues as Photography Technician for the Foundation course.

Matt’s Gallery intern Luci Noel has gained a place at Birkbeck University of London, to study MA Arts Policy and Management. Luci will continue to invigilate at Matt’s Gallery during her studies.

Amelia Barratt will be joining the Matt’s Gallery team during September for a short internship, Amelia currently studies BA (Hons) Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art.
