Alison Turnbull
New works and a talk at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge
Alison Turnbull has completed a new permanent commission for the Chiu Court and Foyer of Pembroke College, University of Cambridge. She will be in conversation with Harriet Loffler, Curator of the Women’s Art Collection at Murray Edwards College on 16 September.
The commission includes a paving design for a new courtyard garden, with York stone cut in a Voronoi pattern, a central black and white porcelain mosaic and a rill.
Inside, two paintings made directly onto the wall on very fine lime plaster panels sit at either end of the long foyer that looks onto the courtyard. Titled 'Up and Down in the Void’ they are abstract paintings generated from found drawings of staircases cut up, re-arranged and ordered by chance.
Turnbull worked in close collaboration with architects Haworth Tompkins and landscape architects Tom Stuart-Smith Studio throughout the project.
To mark the completion of the project Turnbull will be in conversation with Harriet Loffler, Curator of the Women’s Art Collection at Murray Edwards College on 16 September 2023, 5:30-6:15pm.
The talk will be followed by ‘Tender Stones’ a new dance by choreographer Lucy Suggate at 6:30pm.
