Middlesbrough Art Weekender

The 5th edition of the Middlesbrough Art Weekender invites over 75 artists to explore the theme 'power POWER'. This is the fourth consecutive year that Matt's Gallery has worked with Middlesbrough Art Weekender, who are presenting Overlay by Leah Capaldi at their Auxiliary Project Space.

Overlay was originally commissioned by the ICA, London in response to the 2016 Isa Genzken exhibition. The work continues to inform Capaldi's research on performative and sculptural boundaries by examining space and reflecting on the mutating roles between artist and observer, object and subject.

Also showing at this year's weekender is Jimmie Durham's Smashing (2004), which was shown on MattFlix in 2021. The film is showing at Commerce House, a former bank, as part of the exhibition 'power POWER: Irrational Exuberance'. 

Suzanne Treister, who has previously shown with MattFlix, and Carolyn Thompson, who is currently working in response the Matt’s Gallery Archive, are also showing at the Weekender. A full list of artists can be found here.
