Mike Nelson

Hybrid Scripts is the first solo exhibition by Mike Nelson in the North East in nearly 30 years. The exhibition comprises two seminal early sculptural installations Taylor (1994) and Lionheart (1997) in direct dialogue for the first time. Both works reflect on Britain’s colonial past, migration, trade and travel. Lionheart was exhibited at Matt's Gallery as part of BACKSPACE in 1998.

Mike Nelson produces immersive worlds which draw on international political movements, science fiction, counterculture, film and literature. His monumental installations invite the viewer to step into an alternate reality filled with a vast array of objects and personal effects which convey human presence while presenting a world eerily familiar to our own. 

He is represented by 303 Gallery, New York; Galleria Franco Noero, Turin; neugerriemschneider, Berlin and Matt’s Gallery, London.

The show runs from 23 September 2023 to 21 January 2024, Monday – Sunday, 10am – 5pm.
