Nathaniel Mellors and Erkka Nissinen

MOUTHPIECE at New Media Gallery

Work by Nathaniel Mellors and Erkka Nissinen is included in MOUTHPIECE at the New Media Gallery, Vancouver, October 1 - December 11, 2022.

Transcendental Accidents was first shown at Matt's Gallery in 2019 in the exhibition Bad Mantra. Bad Mantra draws its title from an episode in The Aalto Natives for the Finnish Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale, a darkly humorous take on Finnish identity, creation myths and nationalism. From that installation has grown a body of work that extends and develops its narratives.

MOUTHPIECE also presents the work Diemut Strebe and Tony Oursler, with Mellors and Nissinen these four extraordinary artists explore the complexities of the human condition through fragmented bodies and the human voice. The voice is a generic human practice with aesthetic, physiological, cultural, historical, and psychological texture and meaning. Singing, speaking, humming and whispering, they are delivered to us through a world of technology.
