Dean Kenning

Renaissance Man (Social Body Mind Map), 2018

£180.00 (2 left)

The print is an example of a Social Body Mind Map, Kenning’s diagrammatic technique for speculating on the possible sources of an artwork’s existence. Social Body Mind Mapping begins by considering an artist’s own work to be a mystery object, and then utilises four general categories – capacities, motivations resources and motivations – to reflect upon the factors that brought it into being. These factors, which may be individual, material, social, etc., take specific and idiosyncratic form according to the particular work under consideration and its conditions of possibility.

The print is a SBMM of Kenning’s kinetic artwork Renaissance Man, a compulsively rocking animal-like figure on all fours. The way the various factors which influenced and determined the making of the work are laid out under the major categories (capacities, motivations, resources and organisations) mimics the actual material shape of the kinetic sculpture itself (forming the four limbs of the creature).

This print was first shown during Kenning’s exhibition Where It Was at Piper Keys (in Raven Row), where Kenning’s Renaissance Man kinetic sculpture was also shown. It was later shown at Matt’s Gallery for Kenning’s exhibition Psychobotanical.

Each print is signed on the front by the artist.
